As you will soon discover there are lots of different ones available but unfortunately not all are necessarily as good as the manufacturer or the salesman makes them out to be. Now let us take a look at what you should be looking for in the main features of your ergonomic chair.
1. Height of the Seat - It is important that you should be able to adjust the height of your chairs seat easily and those which have a pneumatic lever fitted to them are ideal. It is important that you are able to set the height to a position you will be comfortable. Generally the right height of the seat is one where you are able to place your feet flat on the floor and that your thighs then remain horizontal to it at all times. Also the chair should allow for your arms to be at a height that is commensurate with the height of the desk in front of you.
2. Seat Depth and Width - The seat should be between 17 to 20 inches wide and so be able to support the person sitting in it comfortably. While for the depth of the chair you should be looking for one that you to sit with your back comfortably against the back rest yet still leaving you with between 2 and 4 inches of space between the back of your knees and the seat front.
3. Lower Back Support - A good ergonomic office chair should provide adequate support to this part of the body and should also allow you to adjust the height and depth of the lumbar rest on it. You need a lumbar rest that will ensure that sufficient amounts of support is provided to the lower part of the back where it begins to curve in.
4. Chairs Backrest - Today you can either get a chair that has the backrest joined to the seat or separate. But in both cases the actual width of this part of the chair should be no less than 12 inches and no more than 19. Also it should come with a mechanism which allows you to tilt the backrest and alter the height into a position that not only provides support to a person's back but also that they feel comfortable with. This same mechanism should have a feature that once the perfect angle and height has been chosen will lock the backrest in place.
5. Armrest - A good quality office chair should provide you with armrests that help to support not just your arms but your shoulders as well. Look for a chair that allows you to easily rest the lower part of your arm and elbows on it, but while you are typing the forearms should not be in contact with it. If you can choose one that allows you to alter the height of the armrests so that you can place them in the correct position and one which you feel comfortable with.
If you keep the above points in mind then when it comes to finding the right kind of ergonomic office chair for you will prove to be a much easier task than you first thought. If you can why not spend some time at your local office suppliers showroom testing out a few of their chairs prior to making your purchase. You may even find that they offer you a trial period so that you can actually really see in the work situation whether the chair is suitable or not.
