A Magical Wedding Reception
Erica Longacre
If you are wondering how to make your wedding stand out in your guests' minds as the best they have ever attended, the answer is to book a magician. Magic not only gives a focus to the reception, it also draws people in and breaks any ice.
The special, dream-like quality we all want for our wedding day is beautifully enhanced by magic and the sense of excitement and wonder it creates.
When we got married, my family and my husband's were not on the most cordial terms. I will always be grateful to the magician we booked for our wedding, who transformed a potentially stressful situation into a riotous party. As our jaws hit the floor, we forgot our differences.
At my sister's wedding, the magician did a very romantic trick. He asked Stephanie and her new husband each to pick a card and to sign their name on it. Then he cast a spell over the pack and their two cards became one - a card with two faces, with her name on one side and his on the other. They keep this in a revolving photo frame on their mantelpiece, as a symbol of their union.
My husband doesn't like dancing and would have felt very left out, at one wedding we went to, had it not been for the magician. While I was boogying away with the majority of the guests, Dan saw a red-hot 10 pence piece burn through a pack of cards. The magician had to repeat that trick when I came back to the table!
The venue for my cousin's wedding reception had made a mistake somewhere and the meal was a couple of hours later than it should have been. Luckily, they had booked a magician (on my recommendation!) and we were all so engrossed in watching the magic that the time flew by.
The magician we had at our wedding was extremely versatile. His magic was popular with four generations and he was very kind to the couple of teenagers who felt a bit like fish out of water. He taught them a few simple card tricks, which they're still showing us two years later.
When you are choosing a magician to perform at your wedding, remember that you'll get what you pay for. If you book the cheapest one, you may not be get the standard you'd like. Your wedding is really important - this is NOT the time to skimp! Beyond the fee, if the magician is a member of The Magic Circle, you can be pretty confident he (or she) will be good.
