Internet Directories And Their Role In The Internet

Internet Directories And Their Role In The Internet

Chris Channing

In the early days of the Internet, it was a tough job to find any sort of organization in how websites were found or discovered. There weren't any search engines or Internet directories to give Internet users a helping hand in finding information. But as the Internet directory was introduced, a revolution began!

The Evolution of Internet Directories

In the beginning, Internet directories were just simple websites with a few hyperlinks to other mentionable websites- surely nothing like we have today. But as they evolved, Internet users started using web directories as a means of finding answers to problems, and as a source of finding new information.

But Internet directories haven't been the only Internet users could find websites they might have use of. The search engine was created, which crawled all kinds of websites so that Internet users could freely search to their hearts content.

Search engines then had begun to become more popular than Internet directories- and why shouldn't they? They were more useful at finding new content, and also excelled in keeping their listings automatically updated.

But the big selling point of search engines that propelled them to success was their ability to auto-update content .Whereas directories can't automatically index websites in their database for new content, search engines can and do. This makes them more usable as a result, so Internet users choose search engines over directories the majority of the time.

How Internet Directories Are Used Today

As you most likely know, search engines are used more on average than Internet directories. But web directories still have a place on the Internet, as they allow for "grouping" of websites into categories. This allows for Internet users to find new resources based on tagging- something search engines don't normally do.

In addition, directories allow webmasters to obtain backlinks and PageRank. These two factors allow for better search engine optimization, which brings more visitors to one's website as a result. And as mathematics go, more visitors means more potential money. Therefore, web directories still have a very important role in the Internet today.

Web Directories Of The Future

Internet directories aren't dead yet. Some famous directories, such as the Yahoo! directory, charge vast amounts of money for even the prospect of inclusion into their exclusive results. Webmasters pay hundreds just for a chance at inclusion- which shows how able directories still are.

As further decades come and go, we can only hope that Internet directories continue to take part in the Internet's infrastructure- along with search engines and other listing services. After all, what is the Internet but a bunch of websites interlinked together on a massive scale!

Find websites now by browsing a http://www.directories.gr/Travel/) Travel Directory or http://www.directories.gr/Sports/) Sports Directory.
