Simply put, a web database is a database used online, accessed through a website or some other interface. A web database is handy because you can get access to your data via the Internet from anywhere in the world.

A web database also allows you to update or perform modifications on your data. It also offers the ability to store large amounts of information while organizing files for easier access. A web database is designed in a format that is understood and accessed from a script langauge such as the Hypertext Preprocessor or PHP.

Any site that successfully attracts repeat visitors has to have fresh and constantly updated content. In the world of traditional site building, that means HTML files-and lots of them. The solution to these headaches is database-driven site design. By achieving complete separation between your site's design and the content you want to present, you can work with each without disturbing the other.

For example, one of the most popular types of database-driven websites is the search engine. Despite its immense index, there is also a considerable amount of data in Google's databases, which are accessible from websites by means of queries but not by links. This so-called deep web is minimally covered by Google and contains, for example, catalogs of libraries, official legislative documents of governments, phone books and more.

Other functions that a database-driven website offers is the web directory. The directory could be utilized to feature a list of contacts, addresses or even events in a easily accessible format. A web directory is not a search engine, and does not display lists of web pages based on keywords, instead it lists web sites by category and subcategory. The categorization is usually based on the whole web site, rather than one page or a set of keywords, and sites are often limited to inclusion in only one or two categories.

The site can also be used as a sort of library, since a large number of documents can be stored on the site. The documents can be accessed by the public. Viewers can simply log on to the site and browse through the stored documents.

The site can also be used for surveys. The survey information can be inputted on the site and it can be stored in the database. The website database simplifies the tedious task of distributing survey handouts.
