Helpful Heartburn Tips for the Pregnant Woman

A woman's body goes through a lot of different changes during pregnancy and some of these changes can cause the repeated occurrence of heartburn. If you've never had heartburn before, you will probably have it a lot during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, the placenta produces a hormone called progesterone to relax the muscles of the uterus. This same hormone also relaxes the valve between the esophagus and stomach and lets the gastric acids to come back up.

During digestion, the intestines and esophagus are contracting. These contractions are reduced by progesterone which slows down the digestive process. The growing baby crowding the abdomen also causes acids to be pushed back up through the esophagus.

Sometimes just a few changes in your diet can offer heartburn remedies. For example, not eating foods that are seasoned or spicy can help in preventing heartburn. You should also stay away from any food that contains acid, especially products that contain tomatoes and any citrus fruits.

Consuming smaller meals, instead of eating a lot at one sitting has been shown to reduce the chance of heartburn. Alcohol should never be consumed while pregnant for a healthier baby, especially as alcohol causes heartburn as do drinks with caffeine.

Heartburn remedies can often be found by just omitting certain foods and drinks, but sometimes these changes aren't enough to prevent it and in those cases the use of non-prescription drugs can provide heartburn relief.

Your first choice should probably be chewable antacids. They are usually reliable and should provide fast heartburn relief. There are also liquid antacids that may be used, but be aware that any liquid may naturally cause your stomach to produce even more acids which is counter productive.

Antacids that contain aluminium aren't the best choice, especially if your pregnant. Many women suffer from constipation during pregnancy and aluminium in large doses not only causes constipation, but it also can be toxic.

When buying heartburn remedies, read the labels. Do not take them if aspirin or sodium bicarbonate is included in the ingredients. Swelling is one of the problems that pregnant women experience and sodium bicarbonate can make this problem worse.

If none of the remedies that you try bring heartburn relief, ask your doctor about other options. Just remember that taking more than the regular doses can be a bad idea, even over the counter products for heartburn still contain drugs.
