What To Do About A Painful Back

Kay Brown

Back pain is a problem suffered my many millions of people around the world who find almost no long term relief from this complaint; affecting almost every type of phyical activity they engage in. Only back pain relief medication seems to help, and then only for a little while. The problem with pain relief medication is that it doesn't help the cause of the problem, just merely makes it a little more bearable.

Long term use of pain killing prescription medication is something that should be supervised by a medical doctor as other problems can occur because of their continued use. People can and have become addicted to these types of drugs and have ended up with many more problems than they started out with.

The problem with the back is just how strong it is and at the same time how easily it can become damaged. Sitting incorrectly or standing poorly, can often lead to permanent injurys to the spinal collum and often lead to a permanent condition.

Of course the most common way to injure your spine is by lifting heavy weights or lifting them incorrectly. More recently people are willing to try natural back pain relief treatments to stop their reliance on other types of medication. Stretching can be effective at reducing back as it relaxes the muscles which are often tense.

Some people are now discovering the benefits of reflexology. Massaging the feet in certain areas bring relief to a number of back pain sufferers. Often to compensate for our pain, the back muscles over compensate. Reflexology can help provide relief by improving the circulation which in turn relaxes these hard worked muscles.

The Chinese medical art of acupuncture can also be used to help bring back pain relief, something which has only been recognized a short while in the West. If you follow Traditional Chinese medicine then you will know that they believe all people have a unique energy force running through their body called qi or chi. Chi is blocked in a sick body and needles inserted into specific points, ease many types of pain. There are large numbers of people that use acupuncture on a regular basis and claim it works well for them providing pain relief; especially those who have what is termed a chronic condition.

The Chinese discipline of tai chi has also provided relief as it uses yoga like principles. It is far easier and much slower so there is less likelihood of further damage being caused. The most important aspect of tai chi is that almost anyone can participate as it uses gentle breathing exercises and techniques to help relax the body.

To finish, it is a good idea not to forget the huge benefits that exercise can provide for back pain relief, including those of prevention.
