Video games have become popular many years now. They now reach many different demographics instead of just teen males. The first game players have grown up, and now people from all age groups play games. All in all, many different groups now are using video games. Also, they want to have something to show for their gaming time. Microsoft has realized this in its online service, Xbox Live with an option called Xbox 360 Achievements.

Xbox 360 Achievements has a variety of objectives for each game. For example, Halo 3 has a variety of achievements that players can complete offline in single player. Completing each of the nine campaign missions on different levels will finish an achievement. Also, earning rank level, or being the MVP in a match, while online, will also complete Xbox 360 Achievements rating. Each game has a preset number of achievements that players can complete for. Players then receive a number of points for each achievement that they complete.
The best part of Xbox 360 Achievements is that anyone can view other players' achievements and scores. This allows gamers to proudly display what they have accomplished in different games. Because many of the achievements are genuinely difficult or almost impossible to complete, these achievements can be viewed as a sign of the player's skill. Achievements can most be viewed like a baseball player's statistics, for example.
With millions of players using the Xbox Live service, Xbox 360 Achievements may have set a standard for others to follow. For example, Call of Duty 4 was released not only on the Xbox 360 but also on the PC. The Xbox 360 Achievements version is different from the PC version which has "ranks and challenges," The idea of online persistence and being able to show your achievements is carried over. As this future trend continues, more games will come with achievements for players to show the skill they have. An example would be Lord of the Rings Online where players complete "deeds" to improve their character's abilities. Xbox 360 Achievements allows players to display in their accomplishments worldwide and creating a reason to carry on with the game as well as buy new versions as they became available.
