Smoking Problems and The Problems of Smoking

Andrew W John

Cigarette smoking is not a good habit, that's what one can hear even from smokers. Nicotine is addictive, making it difficult to give it up, and ex-smokers usually need a real fit of strong will to stop smoking. Sadly, because giving up smoking requires some strong will on the smoker's side, many smokers simply do not bother with trying to give up. If they only really knew what is at stake...

First, let's discuss what you won't get from smoking. First of all, it is not pleasant. The initial relaxing effects of nicotine wear off soon after you start smoking, leaving you with nothing but an expensive habit. Then, it does not help improve your image. You may feel more adult, but yellow teeth and bad breath make you look sick rather than "macho".

Death Bought On The Installment Plan

The statistics are staggering. With over 400,000 smoking-related deaths in the US every year, smoking proves to be far more dangerous to US citizens than any war. The US Army has lost only a fraction of this number during the whole WWII! The Japanese and German armies tried for five years (and failed) to cause the damage Americans are now doing to themselves every year! With almost 9 out of 10 cases of respiratory illness caused directly by smoking cigarettes, it is hard to believe that smoking is still not banned.

Smoking however, does much more than just cause lung cancer. It affects also the heart making it more probable to have a stroke, and increasing chances for developing allergies, respiratory problems such as asthma and other chronic diseases. This may happen both to smokers themselves, and to those who only inhale the smoke, for example children of smoking parents.

This is still not the end. Smokers also tend to suffer from other health problems. Pneumonia, wound healing problems and reduced fertility are among the most common ones. However, the real horror starts when a mother-to-be or someone in her vicinity smokes during the pregnancy. Premature deliveries, infant deaths or at least narrowed air passages in children's lungs are more than common. No child is able to defend itself against the negative effects of their parents' smoking, and they often suffer from it even before they are actually born.

There is even more than that...

The problem with cigarettes is not only the death - we will all eventually die. The problem is that the smoke will ruin our physical appearance long before that.

The problems with the changing color of teeth is well-known both to smokers and non-smokers. The tar from cigarettes stains teeth, often forming plaque that can be removed only via dental cleaning. What people do not know is that smoking damages your gums, too. It's not even about the risk of swelling or inflammation, but about restraining the blood circulation in gums, thus weakening them to the point where they can't really support the teeth.

Lack of proper circulation in gums causes severe risk of teeth loss. This is not theoretical! A teenage smoker loses between four and six teeth before he reaches his mid-thirties. Poor blood circulation in the mouth often results also in other problems, most notably complications after dental operations. For example, smokers are more likely to suffer of a dry-pocket.

Finally, the negative effects of smoking are not only about your health. Smoking can also affect your look and your wardrobe. If you compare photos before you started smoking with how you look like now, you'll surely notice that your skin has lost its color and become dull, often with yellowish or greyish touch. Your hair problems are also nothing special - every smoker has less hair which is thinner and less nourished than the non-smoker. But the story does not end here. Cigarette smoke can also damage your clothes. It's not only about the smell, it is also about its indirect ability to damage the clothes. As the smoke blends into the fabric, one needs wash and dry clean them regularly, even if one hasn't worn this exact piece of clothing yet. Either you clean your clothes regularly and turn them into washed rags, or you decide to let them stink. Either way, do not blame the manufacturer - China cheap workforce is not responsible for your bad habits.
