How Children Learn To Read on the Internet
David Morgan
Parents and teachers are now turning to the power of the Internet to deliver literacy coaching to their children.
The Internet has proved an extremely good medium for that, despite some people's reservations. Here's why:
1 Children love doing things on the computer.
2 You can deliver immense technical expertise to coaching individual children. The truth is that teaching literacy well is a technical activity that takes a lot of training. And yet children need daily coaching. The Internet is an extremely practical way to do that.
3 It is a private experience for the child. Many children have very negative attitudes to reading because it is a "repeat failure" experience. The Internet allows them to develop their reading without all their failures being public.
4 It is adaptable. The computer can sense the ease or difficulty that a child is having and adjust an activity accordingly. So, as the child improves he or she can stay within a narrow "challenged but comfortable" zone.
5 The exact dose of education can be controlled. We have found that just 10 minutes per day gets the best results.
The results speak for themselves. We have seen many children who have struggled for years with their reading crack it in just a few weeks
