It is scary to know that something unknown is growing in your womb. Here’s some facts about the most common growth – fibroids.
What are fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are growth in the uterus mainly made of muscle and bodily tissues. It is usually a benign (non-cancerous) and almost never develop into cancer. They can appear to be a single growth or a cluster.
What causes fibroids?
The cause of fibroids is not well understood, with scientists theorizing that it may be due to genetics, hormones or environmental factors.
Who is at risk?
Women of childbearing age, overweight, a family history of fibroids and those who have never given birth.
What are the symptoms?
Heavy bleeding or painful period, feeling ‘full’ in the lower abdomen, frequent urinating and pain during sex.
What are the treatments?
Your doctor will recommend a treatment based on your symptoms, age and the size of fibroids and whether you want any children. There are various treatment options as follows:
a) Pain / Hormonal medicines – if your fibroids are small
b) Shrinking the fibroids without surgery through heat
c) Surgery to take out the fibroids, without removing the uterus (myomectomy)
d) Surgery to remove the uterus (hysterectomy). It is recommended when you are sure you do not want any more children and if your fibroids are causing you heavy bleeding and anaemia.
