The constant barrage of news on the coming recession is likely to make you constantly think about the possible impact on your family and career.

Nobody can foresee the length and impact of the recession. To summarize, no one trick is going to fix all of the problems.

There are, however, measures which you can implement to reduce the impact of the recession on your own life, allowing yourself and your family to emerge through the recession with no ill effects.

Recession Proof Your Career: While you have no control over your company's decisions over whom to hire and who to let go, you can work to make yourself a valuable employee in either your current job or a future one.

Try to find out which skills are most sought after in your industry, and make sure your training in these areas is up to date. Although the skills required can vary according to your field of work, even in today's current economic climate, the world's major economies are facing a skills shortage.

For instance, in February of 2008, demand for those with IT skills reached its highest level in the U.K. in 10 years. In addition, leading up to the 2012 Olympics, Britain is experiencing a shortage of qualified people in the field of construction.

You may already be familiar with which skills are in demand in your field. If you do not have this knowledge, access the Internet and begin searching. Once you have identified what skills you can realistically expect to pick up, locate a course - there are many low cost courses available online or in local adult education classes.

Create Another Income Stream: Another stream of income can be created by finding other income sources that will help you meet your gas, food and housing costs. If you can, try to establish your own small business, as you will have more control. Although you will not make money immediately, this costs you virtually nothing and forces you to plan for the long term, something you will definitely need to do in order to survive recessions which come with unfortunate regularity. The Internet offers many opportunities which require little time or money to set up, or you can search out goods and services which are in high demand in your community.

Economize Where You Can: Avoid using your credit card and buying unnecessary things. Look for less costly versions of some of the essentials, for example the house brands in supermarkets where possible. They are much cheaper than the more popular brands, but are generally of just as high of a quality. This applies to clothes as well.

The recession and its ramifications seem inevitable, but it doesn't necessarily mean a disaster for you or your family.
