Are you thinking about starting a bed and breakfast? Unfortunately, this business is not a case of “If you build it, they will come.” You need to be on the way to someplace popular or near some tourist attractions, such as quaint small towns with events, or even a college football game to make an income with a bed and breakfast.
Think about what you can capitalize on to make your bed and breakfast successful. Horse racing, dogs shows, and other annual events are a boon to bed and breakfasts, but if there are no events near you, you can make your own. Host writers’ retreats, crafters’ classes, or business seminars and give a discount rate when all of your rooms are booked. You can even join with a few other local bed and breakfasts to plan and book the event.
Are you a good cook? The majority of people I have talked to want breakfast in the owner’s home, not a voucher for a nearby restaurant. However, the voucher has worked for some bed and breakfasts in popular areas. Other ideas for bed and breakfast owners who don’t enjoy spending time in the kitchen are having breakfast catered or providing picnic baskets with breakfast muffins and coffee in a thermos.
Are you willing to have people in your house underfoot? If you just can’t wait for company to go home, a bed and breakfast is not your best bet. However, if you love to socialize and enjoy meeting new people, this business may be a perfect fit for you.
