Home improvement is one of America's greatest projects! There's a great feeling of satisfaction resulting from a fresh coat of paint, or a new addition to your home.

Millions of families are remodeling nationwide, and any self-respecting home can afford to perk up today, for there never have been so many products to improve it so much and so rapidly. Siding, paints, built-ins, sliding panels, shingles, fixtures, storm doors, miracle fabrics, floor coverings, heating systems, and countless other products have been improved upon, so that every house can now be a home to be proud of.

Selecting the right contractor and the right products for your job is a real guarantee that you will get your money's worth. But you can also get stung! Improvements and installations advertised at unusually low prices, may not turn out to be such a bargain. Many "victims" have discovered that:

1. The ad mentions a ridiculously low price, but the salesman refused to sell the product at the price and fast - talks the customer into buying a much higher priced item.

2. The customer thought he signed a receipt, when really he was tricked into signing a contract.

3. After the job is done, the customer finds himself on the hook for debts he thought he had paid.

4. The finance payments turn out to be much higher than the salesman promised they would be.

5. The work is unsatisfactory and the contractor won't do anything. about it and can't be located.

Price is always important when you tackle a major home improvement, but the reputation of the contractor you deal with and the products you buy means everything! An investment you expect to pay off in satisfaction for years to come should never be undertaken as a spur-of-the moment job!

There are reputable and skilled firms in every, community. They lose business and are unhappy when you visit the other kind. If a salesman you do not know calls on you, ask him to take you to his place of business. Any reputable contractor has a permanent address and adequate facilities. For your safety, remember these things when improving your home:

1. Know the reputation of your Contractor!

2. Buy by reputation as well as by price.

3. Get everything in writing before you sign, for your protection.

"Another excellent tip for finding the right contractor is to always get at least three (3) quotes for whatever home improvement project you are working on. Also, search the Web for reviews, so you know more about the contractors you are considering."
