A gracefully arching fountain of creamy white blossoms perfuming the spring garden with a delicious fragrance is Philadelphus. Philadelphus or mock orange as it is often called, is a deciduous shrub, completely hardy in the climate of the Long Beach area. It will grow in full syn or partial shade and will serve either as a specimen shrub or a part of a shrubbery border.

Perhaps the best and the one cultivated for the longest time is P. conarius. This plant grows to a height of 8 to 10 feet, has 3-inch ovate-lanceolate leaves and carries its creamy-white fragrant flowers in dense plumes in May and June. A number of hybrids were developed by the French nurseryman, Lemoine. By crossing P. conarius with the small American species P. microphyllus he obtained P. Lemoinei, which is a small graceful shrub with fine leaves, slender stems and small fragrant flowers. There are many varieties in this group.

ANOTHER hybrid is P. virginalis especially noted for its flowers which are double, snowy-white and fragrant, and in addition are 2 to 3 inches in diameter.

The Philadelphus is a very undemanding plant, adjusting as it does to almost any soil and avoiding most garden pests. Pruning should be done each year after flowering, removing wood which has flowered, taking out some old wood clear to the ground to make way for new young shoots.
