Hearing Trouble In Children

Children seldom realize that they are hard of hearing. Their peculiarities are of ten explained as preoccupation, shyness, or just plain stupidity. And so they struggle on, these victims of a defect that is still baffling to science. They carry a double burden — their own handicap and the blame for habits that are but a natural result.

We should befriend these misunderstood children, if for no other reason, because it is a matter of social economy. Doctors, nurses, teachers, welfare workers, parents, friends — all can give valuable assistance.

Detection

Accurate tests —scientifically conducted — should be made of the hearing of all children. Who can measure in terms of discouragement and broken ambition the cost to the child? Who can determine the economic loss to the state ? From a survey made in New York it has been shown that one school child out of eight has, or is likely to have later on, some degree of hearing impairment.

What to Do About Hearing Problems In Children

Treatment is often simple. Removal of hardened ear wax or foreign bodies such as peas, beads, or pieces of paper may clear up the difficulty. Some children may have running ears, a condition that usually needs medical attention. A great many cases of deafness can be checked or cured, if taken in time.

Special classes in lip-reading should be provided for all children whose impaired hearing cannot be permanently cured. Instruction in this art will be a great compensation to them in the future. It is quickly learned by children, constantly improving with use.

Training for Everybody

Uncorrected ear troubles almost always get worse. Parents and teachers must be both patient and just in helping children with this defect to determine their careers. Suitable occupations or professions can be selected and appropriate training planned.

A natural, easy means of communication is every child's birthright. The chance to follow a gainful occupation should be made his privilege.
