The belladonna plant is very toxic. Belladonna is commonly called deadly nightshade. Belldonna is found throughout Europe, West Asia, North America and North Africa. Belladonna plants reach the height of 1.5m (5ft) tall with 18cm (7in) long. The belladonna's berries are very toxic.

The berries from the Belladonna plant are extremely toxic. A child that swallows 5 berries in their mouth could potentially die. An adult that swallows 10 to 20 berries could also potentially die. Belladonna is a weed and can be identified in any wooden area. Belladonna should also not be consumed by certain livestock or dogs and cats. Cattle and rabbits are not affected by the Belladonna poison. These animals may safely eat the Belladona berries.

Allopathic uses for Belladonna

Belladonna can be found in minisicule amounts for over the counter flu and cough remedies. Belladonna is used by eye doctors to dilate pupils. A small amount of the drug is put into a patient's eyes.

Prescription drugs often contain Belladonna. Donnatal is a prescription drug that contains Belladonna alkaloids. Peripheral anticholingergic/antispasmodic action and mild sedation is provided with the usage of Donnatal.

This medicine may help with the treatment if irritable bowel syndrome, acute enterocolistis and as a complimentary therapy in the treatment of duodenal ulcers. There is no conclusive medicine of this prescription drug works for these medical conditions.

Alternative Therapy Uses For Belladonna

Belladonna was proved by Hanhemann in 1799. The medicine was used to cure Scarlett fever. Homeopathic belladonna is used to cure circumstances with sudden onsets. These type of conditions mimic Belladonna poisonings. Belladonna is used to cure people with high fever, sore throat, nausea, delirium, muscle spasms, flushed skins and dilated pupils. Anyone consuming Belladonna will experience these type of symptoms.

Homeopathic Belladonna is also used to treat cold and flu symptoms, infections with inflammation, intense pounding headaches, boils, earaches, seizures, labor pain, pink eye, nose bleeds, nephritis(inflammation of the kidneys) restless sleep, teething pain, tonsillitis, acne and sunburn.

Women use the Belladonna remedy to cure treat breast infections, urinary bladder infections, menstrual cramps, and irritated nipples due to breast feeding.

These conditions are better with warmth and standing. Cold air, movement and lying down may worsen symptoms.
