Atherosclerosis, as well as arteriosclerosis, involve the depositing of disease causing elements into the arterial wall causing a loss of elasticity and decrease in diameter of blood vessel.  As these deposits build up they cause a plaque to form on the artery wall.  If the plaque ruptures and a clot forms, this could block blood flow to the heart causing a heart attack.  If the rupture and clot occur causing blockage of blood to the brain, a stroke is the result.

Arteriosclerosis develops with aging. The cause for arteriosclerosis is not certain but related to: genes, obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, smoking, lack of exercise, and more.

Causes of Arteriosclerosis:

• Hereditary factors. If your family has a history of heart attacks, you may be prone to have one.

• The male population. Females are less likely to have it because their hormones offer a certain degree of protection.

• Smoking and High Blood Pressure.

• High blood cholesterol levels. You should always have your cholesterol levels checked as a preventive measure not just for arteriosclerosis but also for other diseases caused by having high cholesterol levels in your blood.

Treatment

1.    Alternative therapies combining a range of physical and psychological approaches have been shown by Dr. Dean Omish in the United States to halt and even reverse atherosclerosis. Particularly successful seem to be those involving a healthy diet with food supplements, exercise, yoga, massage, and relaxation therapy, counseling and other "talking therapies" linked to close social support.

2.    The fat eaten should be a blending of different types of unsaturated fat from sources like: Olive oil, rape oil, sunflower oil, soy oil, walnut oil and fish. Then you will get enough of mono-unsaturated fat, omega-3-unsaturated fat, and omega-6-poly-unsaturated fat, but not too much of any of them.

3.    Take a glass of water and add one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey. Drink this solution for treating arteriosclerosis. Honey is very effective in reducing the cholesterol levels of the body.

4.    Vitamin C has shown to reduce cholesterol levels and lowers high blood pressure.

5.    To keep your arteries free from plaque, you need to consume an omega 3 rich diet. The main dietary sources of omega 3 fatty acids are cold water fishes such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, Hoki and sardines.

6.    Folic acid and vitamin B6 and B12 are a treatment for reversing atherosclerosis disease, because they are the nutrients needed by the enzymes which keep homocysteine in check, thus preventing atherosclerosis disease.

7.    Your diet is responsible for the excess level of calcium getting accumulated in the blood vessels. Hence taking a proper diet is the simple and logical solution. Whole grains, seeds, fruits and vegetables all should be included in your diet. You should eat several small meals in a day. Avoid animal fats, ghee, cream, butter, tea, coffee, processed food, pickles and red meat in your diet. Cook your food in either olive oil or sunflower oil.
