Massage therapy today is an extension of physical therapy, but with a more rather in-depth and more varied approach to address and correct certain physical ailments and problems. It is set up in many ways similar to the educational standards being practiced in many other related health fields. Any one planning to become a certified or licensed Massage Therapists should be able to meet the necessary requirements of National, Local & State Certification board.
Choosing one among many accredited schools that offer the right and extensive massage therapy course somewhat is daunting. It is most important for any prospective massage therapy student to choose a massage therapy course that has not only a good curriculum, but also licensing and, or certification. Massage therapists are required by law to be duly licensed, since practicing without a license is illegal and has stiff penalties. It's best to choose a school or university that helps its graduate's get the required license or certification to practice.
The practice of massage therapy is legal in many areas of the country, and what the requirements are may vary. It is mandatory, though, that students undergo at least 400 hours of massage therapy training, plus get the needed educational training and other academic requirements. Covered in the training is at least 135 hours of physiology and anatomy, 300 hours of massage and body work application - including its theories, 20 hours of pathology, 30 hours of business ethics, and a minimum of 135 hours of related course work. When all 400 hours are satisfied, the practitioner can then proceed to the review proper and testing.
The National Certification Test covers all the important and detailed subjects of Massage Therapy Certification, with at least a minimum of 150 test questions. After successfully passing the certification exams, a professional massage therapy practitioner is required to undergo every five years a review and retesting for renewal of his/her license. Some states require a minimum of 3,000 hours to be completed to be able to undergo the renewal process.
Massage Therapy students can choose a variety of massage therapy technique training programs that are being offered in universities, schools, and other teaching institutions specializing or concentrating in such health fields. Common massage therapy courses cover techniques or practices in the more popular Swedish, Shiatsu, Reflexology, and Thai massage to name a few. To become a Massage Therapist, one doesn't stop at learning the lessons of massage techniques, but also demands knowing the basic make up of the human body - its physiology, kinesiology, history and theory, as well as business etiquette and strategies to equip the practitioner better in practicing his craft to those who most need it.
