Identity theft is one of the most frightening threats we face today. The crime seems to spring up in our communities when we don't expect it to, and it causes us all a great amount of stress. Even if it never happens to anyone we know, its still a threat we all fear.

Few people understand how identity theft occurs, and that's often why it happens. There are measures we all should take to prevent it, but not everyone knows what to do. Knowing how an enemy thinks is often the best pathway towards success.

One common mistake people make, one they most likely don't even realize they're doing, is using weak passwords. If you're using a password that's short, or obvious, then its easy for people to figure out. Use symbols and numbers in your passwords to strengthen them, and it'll fortify your accounts well.

Something almost everyone knows to do is to shred all documents that contain important personal information. However, if you do not cross shred them, then it is plausible for someone to piece your papers back together and steal whatever information there was. It happens a lot, though it may seem like a burden for the thief.

Phone solicitations may seem irritating, but it could actually be more threatening that you'd think, especially if their goal is to con credit card information from you. Its called vishing, and its becoming a regular threat in itself. Just be aware of what could come out of those irritating calls from those solicitors, as they may have no intentions to sell you a thing.

Never open messages from people if you don't know them very well. Don't click links in those emails if you do open them. The links within could contain malicious software meant to steal personal information for the sender.

This last one is important for Americans, and that is to keep your social security card kept hidden away in a safe place. If someone who wants to do malicious things to your life gets a hold of that, they can do whatever they want with it. Don't take it with you where you go, keep it safe, and don't go giving it out at each and every notice either!

Keep these simple rules in mind and the threat of identity theft will seem minuscule. Knowledge is always the best defense against an unknown threat. Keep in mind, this is your life were talking about, so its up to you to protect it.
