Electric scooters were invented to help make life easier for the disabled. Compromised movement and disabilities are likely to weaken muscle movement, and these vehicles proved to be an easy to access mode of transportation. Electric scooters are battery operated and this subsequently reduces speed limits as compared to fuel-operated vehicles. They resemble chairs on wheels and require minimum storage space. Continuous improvements and innovations have enabled manufacturers to create folding electric scooters that reduce storage space even further. They live up to their name and can be folded and carried with ease.
Scooters can be said to have made commuting for millions of people suddenly much easier. During the latter phase of the 19th century, when factories were coming up and thousands of people were commuting from the world's rural localities into the cities, the problem of getting to and from work had to be addressed. The Far East which was just now entering into the industrialized realm, found that they had to find a way to commute. Scooters were the answer. These quickly evolved into the different types that we known today.
Early scooters were foot powered but today's versions are either electric powered or gas powered. The foot powered ones are still in existence but are used more for recreational purposes rather than commuting. For longer distances and for more reliable performance, electric scooters are ideal. These are also used for recreational purposes as well in many parts of the US.
Electric scooters have become very efficient and easy to maintain. Unlike the motor car, the cost of maintaining an electric engine is significantly lower than that of a motor car. It is not unheard of for a motor vehicle repair bill to reach astronomical heights. A $500 to $3000 repair bill is not uncommon. These numbers are unheard of with an electric scooter.
So basically you need to consider the range of the electric scooters mobility, the rider's weight, the terrain of the area where it will be used, its portability as well as the climate it will be used in. You also want to try a few out to make sure as you can have a choice of stand-up or sit down ones and of course, you need to know what your budget will allow.
The terrain is also a consideration when choosing powered scooters, obviously the flatter the land the better. If there is going to be hill climbing involved, then you may want to consider making sure that you purchase one of the 350 watt electric motor scooters. You also need to consider portability, meaning how much will you need to carry the electric scooter around? Most are small enough but some are also fairly heavy and not as easy to fold.
