There's a saying, "Selling is a numbers game" so the M.U.D. marketing method might be familiar to you...

The theory behind this marketing strategy-- If you throw enough "mud" on the wall, some of it will stick and you'll make money.

The M.U.D. method comes off as a "quick" and "easy" way to market your product. It is one of the most common used methods by new business owners today.

This approach sounds good... why waste the time in research trying to figure out your target market when you sell to everybody and watch the sells roll in.

However, this approach is costly in time and money with little indication of actually being effective, this approach only creates an air of "busyness."

Imagine for a moment that you have a pile of mud lying next to your desk. Since we're imagining, we'll make it a big pile right there on the carpet. Now you grab a handful and sling it at the wallpaper.

Looking at the wall, what did you hit? Without knowing your target you continue to sling even more mud.

After you used up all the mud and the room is covered, you find out what the actual target was. The target was a plaque on the wall and even with the mud slung all over the room the plaque was only hit a few times.

M.U.D. stands for Market Un-Determined or Marketing Un-Defined.

Both of them spell disaster for your profits.

Taking the time out to find your target, the outcome would have been different.

Taking the time to research and identify your target market may seem like it's going to take longer before you see results. In reality, it speeds up the process of achieving your goal...profitable business. You'll see those results with reduce effort and time.

To identify your Target Market, ask yourself these questions:

1. What problem does your product/service solve?

2. What benefit will the client enjoy?

3. Who does the problem affect?

4. What does that person look like? Male or Female or Both Stay at home mom or power executives. Are they baby boomers or students? Where do they hang out? What hobbies do they enjoy doing? etc.

Create a portrait of your ideal client in great detail.

M.U.D. marketing keeps you knocking your brains out trying to sell to a gazillion people when only a limited number really want what you offer. Is it any wonder you feel frustrated with your efforts.

If you feel like your business is stuck in mud, stop wasting your most valuable asset...time...with M.U.D. marketing.

Remember...if you try to sell to everyone, you end up selling to no one.
