Rather than studying for your CCNA exam at a proper class at a networking training centre, a good alternative is to study using CCNA books. There is a large variety of CCNA books these days and new students might be very confused on which books to buy. Here are 3 types of books which I believe are necessary for studying and preparing for the CCNA exam in the most complete way:
1. CCNA self-study books - These are complete courses in book form and can be used as an alternative to the classroom-based courses. They are also extremely useful as a study aid for those who have already committed to taking a classroom class. They are highly detailed and provide a full coverage of the topics required for the exam. They generally do not assume that the reader has any experience and thus are very useful for beginners.
Because Cisco updates the CCNA syllabus on the regular basis, mainly to introduce new technologies but also to remove those topics which are no longer relevant in today's context. It is therefore important to get a self-study CCNA book which is relevant to the latest revision of the CCNA exam, and this is something you might want to note when buying such books.
2. Exam Revision Books - These types of books are also known as the "exam cram" books. They are designed more of a memory aid to help you remember all those difficult facts before the exam. I recommend that you only start using these once you have finished absorbing the material from the self-study books. This is because these exam revision books are more broad-based and do not provide as much detail.
This is especially important if you are a newcomer to the networking certification world and do not have much job experience as these quick revision books often assume that you already have some basic networking knowledge. For the recall intensive CCNA exam, these revision books are definitely key to helping you remember all the important facts.
3. Practice exam books - These CCNA books contain one or more sets of practice tests or mock exams designed to simulate the real thing. These are most useful for practice and to boost your confidence before you go and attempt the real thing. Some of the best books come with a testing engine where you can run the mock test on your computer. The simulation closely mimics the real exam and this will boost your confidence even further and will help with skills such as exam time management.
