Lawyers are not cheap, and they certainly aren't always easy to work with. If you don't already have a good attorney to work with, odds are you will be in for a ride as you try to find one you can trust. Through judging them on several aspects, you can make the chase much shorter.
The right criminal defense attorney should never pressure you into a sale. If the attorney tries to discredit their competition and continually pressures you to make a decision before going to see them, something is probably wrong. This is the worst tactic conceived, yet some attorneys still do this. It's just too bad that they lose the trust that intelligent consumers would otherwise give them.
There is no better "proof in the pudding" than seeing an attorney's history in pleasing clients. If the attorney can show you a list of cases that were won, then you should be able to respect the attorney a bit more. Also ask about cases that were lost, and why. In reality, this is probably not the case.
The deal-breaker for many is when you ask an attorney for his or her personal phone number. Ask an attorney if you can call them at any point, day or night. If he or she hesitates, the attorney probably doesn't care about clients as much as others would. A good attorney should focus on customer service and not be selfish. Indeed, sometimes an emergency call isn't just helpful- it's mandatory when convicted of another crime.
Money is what drives a criminal defense attorney. In their quest to get more of it, they can become clouded in their own perspective of their service. You should be looking at their previous clients to see if you know any personally. If you do, ask the person what they thought of the law firm and ask if they would do repeat business with them again.
