Atopic dermatitis more commonly known as eczema or atopic eczema is a chronic skin condition in which the skin becomes inflamed, itchy, dry and may begin to crack. In most cases eczema affects infants, and in some instances continue on throughout their adulthood. There has been recorded cases of infants having eczema that went away and never reappeared until later in their adult lives.
According to some European studies approximately 30% of the skin related visits to the dermatologist resulted in a diagnosis of atopic eczema. The hardcore truth is this skin condition knows no boundaries. It has no problem attacking men, woman, children, and even those of various ethnic backgrounds. In a recent study doctors in Western Europe, North America and Australia it was discovered that the number of individuals being diagnosed has grown.
It was discovered by Scottish researchers that children with severe eczema go through life feeling that their life is impaired to the same extent as other individuals with chronic illnesses. It was also revealed that young children who are stricken with atopic eczema tend to develop asthma moths or even years later. The medical journal refers to this condition as, "The Atopic March."
The knowledge regarding eczema has come a long way, however it there is still some things that doctors aren't sure about such as the cause of this skin condition. Scientists speculate that the condition is a result of a variety of factors including personal and family genetics, immune response and environmental factors including personal and emotional discord has been known to make eczema worse, there is no proof that it actually causes the condition.
Doctors have come to realize that if both parents have eczema or other disorders such as asthma or hey fever, chances are that their children will develop it. Approximately 75% of children with eczema also develop hay fever or asthma.
Since medical treatment in the United States is getting more expensive by the second, many people living eczema have decided to take matters in their own hands. The have began seeking natural cures and home remedies.
