Many marketing budgets are being reviewed with a fine tooth comb. As revenues constrict, companies are reducing expenses. Unfortunately, marketing is one of the areas taking the greatest hit. During difficult times, expanding budgets are better but not realistic. The reality is that today's marketing budgets have to do more than ever before.
What can you do with a reduced budget? There are quite a few techniques you can apply that are easy to implement and cost little or nothing. The key is to get viral. Have others do the selling for you. Here are a few suggestions for getting started.
Start by making the most of what you have. A business of any size needs to consider leveraging each touch point. When you speak to a customer, call someone on the phone, or send and email, use that as an opportunity to educate or inform. When you think about all the touches you make on a daily basis, they really add up.
Make a conscious effort to ask for referrals. In many industries, referrals are the lifeblood of the business. Starting a referral campaign is easy and can be done simply by asking. You may also consider offering an incentive to individuals who pass along your name or encourage others to transact with your company.
The media is the message. Communication takes many forms. When sending bills or putting merchandise in a shopping bag, consider adding a flier or promotional offer that entices buyers to come back or visit you online. The key is to keep the dialogue going and provide customers incentives that keep them coming back.
Test new campaigns. When budgets shrink and times are difficult, it's common to stop testing or spending on new campaigns. But what works during good times may not be as effective when times are difficult. Dedicate a portion of your budget towards new campaigns, messaging, or offers.
Improving your marketing results doesn't have to cost a lot. Some of the most effective marketing campaigns cost literally nothing to begin - think viral marketing and you'll get the idea. Consider how you might be able to make the most of the campaigns that are already working and continue to scale them. To often, successful campaigns never fully realize their true potential.
Offer a free download on your website. What can you do to attract more visitors and have them give you valuable information about themselves? The information you provide could be a free informational packet, checklist, or video. If people want free, you can give it to them but remember to ask them for something first. Be the master of get/give and you can build your list quickly.
