Red Cliff is a movie that defies time and space. John Woo has written an enticing film that is wonderfully acted. It combines the history and the legend of the Chinese war, during the historical Chinese period of the Three kingdoms.
John Woo has created a well rounded movie, which shows the war from various angles and perspectives. It is an entertaining film, and very close to telling the real story of the war.
This is a movie that you will find yourself watching more than once. The intricate characters leave you with a feeling of longing to know more about them. You will realize that each time you watch the film you will notice something that you have not seen the before. As one may expect, John Woo also delivers on the tight actions scenes, like only he can. There are rumors that John Woo is working on an American version of the film, but in the mean time you should check out this original film.
The only problem with this film is that it has not end. The film leaves you off with no resolution, and wanting more. Luckily the second part of the movie was released on DVD earlier this year. So if you are someone like me, I suggest you purchase both DVDs at the same time so you can watch them back to back. If you do not do this, I can guarantee that you will be purchasing the second DVD as soon as the first movie ends, or does not end for that matter.
Red Cliff is a great movie that gives you a look into what this war was about. There are numerous perspectives and the imagery will have you feeling for each of the character, throughout the way. Although the film tends to get a little slow towards the middle, it is still one of the best films that I have watched throughout the year.
