Hamsters are great pets to keep, especially for kids. A Hamster is a pet that is very easy to look after, they are quite happy to be with people and most of them are good for handling. They are likewise fascinating and do not require intensive care unlike other animals. It is advisable to know before you purchase one that it's the right pet for you to keep.
Even if hamsters are ideal for children, for people living in small houses and for those individuals who do not have a lot of spare time for pets, caring for hamsters still requires commitment on you behalf. Otherwise, your pet might end up been given to a rescue home.
To evaluate whether a hamster is good for you as a caged pet, here are a few tips for you to consider:
Hamster species are not all the same. And every variety has a different temperament, behavior, characteristics, look and suitability as a pet. There are aggressive hamsters and timid hamsters. Some of them though seem to have been made ideal for pets. There is also a species of hamster that like the companionship of hamsters of the same breed, own gender and own age. Some of them, however, tend to become unfriendly towards other hamsters as they age, whether of their own breed or not; so requiring them to be separated from any other hamsters you may have.
The age of the owner- Hamsters work well with children depending on the age of the child. On the whole though, young hamster owners need to be overseen to guarantee that the pet is properly taken care of and that important worries are addressed. Some species could get easily irritated when handled in not the right manner and some of them may nip when hurt or annoyed. To stop this happening, young owners should be advised on a regular basis with respect to their care of their pets. Among adult owners, however, especially for those who are at work during the day, hamsters make very good pets as they can wait until evening for activities with the owners.
Availability of space- Hamsters, in the main, are ok for small spaces. This is why they are popular among apartment renters and people who live in small houses. But you should also know that there are some species of hamsters such as the Chinese hamster that need large cages to meet their need to exercise.
Personal preference- The hamster species variations range from color to behaviour. Each breed is unique, thus it is in the owners greatest interest to know his own preference when it comes to the type of pet they will keep.
Your cage- It is invariably best to purchase a large cage. Why? Well the larger the cage, the happier your hamster will be and a happy pet is a healthy one.
