For over two decades, Dr. John Douillard has been teaching Ayurvedic medicine, nutrition, and natural health and fitness. Along with Deepak Chopra, he co-directed an Ayurvedic clinic for cancer for eight years. He's also trained over 2,000 doctors from the West in Ayurvedic medicine.
As an Ayurvedic practictioner, Dr. John Douillard has a radically different view of the body and of what health means. His passion is to help transform people's lives by assisting them to heal their bodies and minds and to restore balance in their lives naturally.
When John went to an Ayurvedic lecture in 1979, he was looking for that zone athletes can achieve during sports, where they feel elated and maximized. He found out that there was a secret formula to this, and what began as a hobby transformed into a calling. This formula is what John calls the 'coexistence of opposites,' and involves experiencing both composure and dynamic activity simultaneously.
John came to see that if he trained less as a professional tri-athlete, he could perform better and accomplish more. It seems that the source of his activity was rest!
John started training athletes based on the idea that if you can first establish silence, you can do anything. It wasn't long until he recognized that what worked in exercise could work in life. And an understanding of the benefits of a spiritual life became clear. Through these principles, a person can unravel the stressors-emotional, physical and mental-and disarm the protective nervous system. Only then can we let out who we really are.
Ayurvedic medicine is a system of medicine designed to help bring a person back into balance so his body can have the clarity to employ its own healing system to heal itself. Rather than speak the language of disease, an Ayurvedic diagnosis gives information about the underlying imbalances of what the body is trying to heal, the priority system of the body. We need to facilitate that so our bodies can reinstate their ability to heal themselves.
Dr. Douillard's passion is to teach people to use Ayurvedic medicine to understand the spiritual transformation that can happen when we see beyond the physical. He sees himself as a servant who is here to help people. He continues to develop the ability, and teaches others to do the same. If people feel safe enough to be themselves, they become like little suns to make other people feel safe enough to open up their hearts and be themselves. This has the power to change the world.
