In the realm of survival of the fittest, response to danger is naturally an instinct of humans in the presence of risks or threats. Fighting to stay safe or escaping to safety are responses that the body and mind will react either way as determined by the mind to be a better alternative for survival. This fight or flight response comes about due to flows of adrenaline that allows the body muscles to react quickly to the danger situation. While these feelings are normally temporarily in nature, the excess adrenaline can remain in the body leading to panic attacks.
What are panic attacks? Panic attacks are marked by persistent and chronic condition of fear and dread. Feeling of fear is itself a natural emotion, however, panic attacks because fear that is exaggerated and overwhelming that can be provoked in absence of any dangers or threats at all. The attacks cannot be explained in terms of its cause - that is, production of adrenaline and changes in hormones that accelerate the body functioning to deal with danger - as there are no rational reasons for the occurrence of panic attacks at all. The impact of the attack is severe and hardly anything can stop it from happening.
Panic attacks are an exaggerated condition due to fear. While some fear is healthy, in panic attacks there is an overwhelming amount of fear. The panic attack can come into our lives with no warning at all. There may be no logical reason why we can get into a state of panic, however once a panic attack occurs it is very intense and there is nothing that we can do about it.
In presence of perceived threats and dangers, simple bodily sensations will be stimulated as described in the symptoms and signs in the preceding paragraph. But when you have a panic attack, there can be absolutely no warning signs at all. The body alarm system will trigger by itself without any real or perceived danger like a false alarm signaling dangers that do not even exist or is less serious than the reaction warrants. Therefore, it is not unreal that there are instances that a victim can suffer sudden panic attack even when he or she is sleeping.
Panic attacks cannot or difficult to stop when it attacks and they normally happen without any potential signals or predictions. This is because the excessive level of hormones imbalances and adrenalines that flood the body and muscles causes such extreme terror and desperation that are so beyond the grasp of the actual situation. It is therefore not only necessary but compulsory to attempt to control the exaggerated emotions of fear using different appropriate means of treatments.
