Lawyers work in many fields of law from litigation to business law to bankruptcy law. Before you can become a lawyer, you must attend college and obtain a bachelor's degree. Your bachelor's degree can be majored in any subject as well as pre-law.
After you complete your four year degree, there is an initial test that you must take before you can enter a school of law. The entrance exam to law school is called the LSAT. Most law school admission counselors advise that you prepare by taking study courses before taking the LSAT. Your LSAT scores are an important factor in your admission to law school. Achieving a good score on the LSAT will increase your chances of gaining admission to the law school of your choice.
Once you have taken the LSAT and achieved a score that will allow you to enter law school, you can take the next step career. Law school requires a commitment of four years before you can obtain your legal degree. There are many field of law in which to concentrate on and while in school you will be exposed to all areas of law. A single focus is highly unlikely during the first few years of law school.
During your first few years in law school you will focus mainly on legal research and writing. This is one of the most important skills you will learn while in law school and hope to master as you career as a lawyer grows over time. Legal research and writing is the backbone of any lawyer and without being able to master this area of study you will not be able to move from one level to the next.
Another important facet of your legal education consists of interning with actual lawyers and within the legal system. There is no better experience than learning firsthand from those who work in the legal field each day. It will be vital to your learning experience to work through each role that is played within a law firm or court system. You can begin by interning as a law clerk with a lawyer or interning as a paralegal or legal assistant. Paralegals and legal assistants perform many of the roles of a lawyer with the exception being they are not allowed to provide legal advice and in most cases can not appear with a client in a court setting.
Once you have successfully completed law school you have one final test before you can enter the field of law as an attorney. The Bar Exam must be passed before you can practice in any field of law. It is urged that you prepare as you did with the LSAT for the Bar Exam.
Now that you have passed the bar you have entered in the field of many lawyers. The field of law is like no other. Each day is different than the previous. Law is a career that forces you to continued growth.
