If there is one thing that people have a difficult time understanding, it's the Internet, especially whenever they are just starting out with an online business. Most people think back to the day whenever all that was necessary was to build a website and you would have success to one extent or another. This is still possible but it rarely ever happens and now, you need to make sure you're working on the website regularly to see results.
Although there are a number of different things that need to be done to your website in order to make it popular, gathering incoming links is one of the most important. I can't tell you just how much you should be doing this but I can tell you that most people that have websites that get a lot of traffic work on it every day. Incoming links is a process that is known as search engine optimization and when it is done properly, the search engine will reward you with a lot of traffic.
There are a number of reasons why it is so important but it basically boils down to the fact that incoming links show that you are popular in the eyes of other websites. The only way that Google and other search engines have of ranking it properly is by looking at how popular you are and they do this by the incoming links. If you have additional links, more than other websites, you will be viewed as more popular than they are and receive more traffic.
The problem with all of this is that it is difficult to get these links, and this is especially true whenever you're just starting out online. A few years ago, people used to exchange links regularly and they would do this in an automated fashion but unfortunately, reciprocal linking has lost its favor in the eyes of the search engines. If you want to rank well in the search engines now, you need to have non-reciprocated, one-way links that are incoming.
You can get these links in a number of different ways but some are going to take a little bit more work than others. We would recommend is that you get a variety of different links by using as many different link grabbing techniques as you possibly can.
Article marketing is a great way to get these incoming links and by writing articles that are related to your niche with a link included, you may be able to get incoming links from a variety of different sources. Along the same lines is something that is known as social marketing. This is also an excellent way to get incoming links and the search engines love links that are coming from these locations.

Just make sure that you look at these link networks carefully so that you can to choose one that is going to provide you with quality incoming links on a regular basis. If you use these methods wisely, you can be rewarded with a lot of traffic as a result of it.
