Damage to our skin, such as scars, will often fade and become less noticeable with age; however, in the event this does not occur, there are options to help reduce a scar's appearance. Treatments can vary from over the counter remedies to medical procedures, and the relative results from these treatments will depend upon the size and degree of scarring.

If your particular scar is rather light and not easily seen, consider a home remedy like the Curad Scar Therapy treatment. This product uses strips containing only natural ingredients, unlike many other solutions that use chemicals, needed in the skin's healing process to create new cells and heal the scar.

For scars that need the attention of a dermatologist or physician, some prescription creams such as Retin-A or Scar FX that are rubbed on the affected areas and promote the re-growth of healthy skin are recommended. Mederma is another dermatologist-recommended sheeting/strip treatment that promotes healthy new skin growth to reduce the visibility of scars.

A physician may feel that the best choice for a person with severe scarring is surgery to actually replace the scarred skin. Dermatologists can perform either conventional or laser surgery in these cases.

While laser treatments are typically not as invasive or complex as conventional surgery, the expense for such a procedure is often much higher in comparison. Laser surgery works by removing the damaged blood vessels that are responsible for the discolored appearance of scars and bolster new cell growth to help heal the remainder of the scar.

Conventional surgery can remove the entire scarred area, but sutures and/or grafting necessary to cover the affected area will leave scars of its own. However, some feel that the smaller surgical scars are less unsightly as the original, larger scars.

Of course, preventative measures are always recommended to reduce the possibility of scarring and when you know the events that could cause scarring (pregnancy, weight fluctuations, surgery, etc.), use of lotions and creams can prepare the skin for the damage.

If a scar is caused by an unexpected act or mishap, treating it is obviously the best decision. It is helpful to realize there are several ways to handle scar treatment.
