One of the most heinous crimes that people commit is kidnapping. Kidnapping is when you forcibly make someone come with you against his or her will or against the will of their legal guardians. Kidnapping usually leads to false imprisonment, which is defined as holding a person without any legal justification or jurisdiction. Kidnapping does not always involve children, despite the word kid. There are several reasons for kidnapping. Kidnapping may be done for money - a kidnapper may require that a ransom be paid before returning the person. Kidnapping for ransom is a common practice in places like Mexico, Baghdad and Colombia.
Another monetary motivation for kidnapping is the money one makes by selling the victim into slavery. Slavery is a hidden yet insidious problem in many places. Known as human trafficking, it can be found in a variety of countries and in many unexpected locations. You may expect to find sex slaves in a place like Thailand, but you would be shocked to find out that there are plenty of slaves in the United States as well! Slaves can be used as domestic workers, laborers, or streetwalkers.
Some kidnappers abduct victims in order to perform a crime. For instance, a kidnapper may abduct children in order to sexually assault them. This can be seen in high profile cases such as the Jaycee Lee Dugard case, in which an eleven-year-old girl was abducted by a registered sex offender and imprisoned in his backyard for eighteen years. The kidnapper fathered two daughters by Jaycee. The first daughter was born when Jaycee was around thirteen years old.
Another high profile case was the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping. Elizabeth was fourteen years old when she was kidnapped to become her kidnappers second wife. There are countless other stories too grotesque to relate " these are just the edited and mild versions.
Sometimes a parent will take a child that they do not have custody of. This is considered kidnapping as well. This type of kidnapping is connected to child custody disputes. A disgruntled parent without custody will take the child and run for it. Even though the child is usually not in danger, this type of kidnapping is regarded just as seriously in the legal system. A lot of the time, the parent does not have to take the child by force since the child will willingly leave with them. But this does not matter to the court. If the court took consent of minors seriously, then they would have no ability to prosecute people who have illegal sexual contact with minor consent.
