The Sciatic Nerve is the largest nerve in your body (about as big as your thumb). There are many nerves that travel from the lumbar spine and come together to form the Sciatic Nerve. This nerve travels through the pelvis and into both legs branching off into smaller nerves as it travels all the way down to the toes. It allows the muscles of the legs to contract and for the legs to move in order to make us walk or run.

Because the Sciatic Nerve is so big, it is possible for it to be irritated easily. This can happen when the lumbar spine or the pelvis is misaligned causing interference to the nerves that create the Sciatic Nerve. These misalignments can happen for many different reasons. It can be from an injury or fall at any time in your life, lifting an object the wrong way, or even a repetitive stress to the area like a lot of long distance running or walking. These stresses not only lead to misalignments of the spine, but also stress and strain to the surrounding muscles. Because the nerve supply to these muscles is reduced due to the misalignment, they are not able to relax.

The irritation to the Sciatic nerve can lead to pain in the back, the hips, groin, buttocks, or even pain traveling all the way down the back of the leg. This pain that travels down the leg is called Sciatica. Sciatica can be improved by improving the motion of the spine and pelvis in order to reduce the irritation to these nerves and to allow the surrounding muscles to relax.

Chiropractors have gotten great results for many people who suffer from Sciatica. A Chiropractor provides a treatment called an adjustment which recreates normal motion in the spine in order to relieve nerve interference and to allow the brain to communicate with the body at 100%. By improving this communication, your body can perform at its optimal level.

If you experience Sciatica and are looking for a Houston Chiropractor, give us a call at Core Chiropractic: (713)622-3300. We would be happy to sit down with you, discuss your symptoms, and determine what we can do to help you.
