People who have bruxism want to figure out how to stop grinding their teeth. Teeth grinding at night doesn't seem too serious at first look, but it is one of those things that over time can do some serious damage. Everyone wants to have healthy teeth, and if you suffer from bruxism and don't do anything about it for 30 years, some real problems can develop.
Grinding your teeth at night is hard to stop, because you do it in your sleep and most people are not even aware they are doing it. How is it possible to stop something that you don't even know you are doing? Anyone who has night time bruxism faces this special challenge of curing a bad habit that they cannot even be aware they are doing.
If you do have bruxism, your dentist will most likely be the one to tell you because he will see the signs of grinding on the surface of your teeth. Most likely, your dentist will then recommend you get a custom mouth guard that will minimize the damage. Unfortunately, this type of mouth guard will not cure your bruxism but will only lessen the damage that is done to your teeth at night. Also, any custom made mouth guard your dentist will want to fit you for will usually cost between $500 to $1,000.
Your other option is to try to cure the problem naturally. Unfortunately, there is no one single cure for all people as the reasons why people grind their teeth vary from person to person. Finding a cure is difficult because there is no set reason why you have the habit and everyone who grinds his or her teeth may do it for a different reason. Those reasons could include stress, a nervous habit, teeth that are misaligned, or some other unknown problem. Identifying what is specifically causing your bruxism could take a while to figure out.
In the end you have a difficult choice: do you settle on the mouth guard or do you try to fix the problem once and for all? This is a difficult decision to make as there is no way to know whether you will be successful at stopping this habit. However, whichever route you decide to go, it is best that you get started right away to minimize the damage to your teeth.
