GPS units are now becoming mainstream as more and more people decide they might have a use for them. All of the newer units have a direction system that uses voice and so you can hear the directions as well as look at them on a screen. Some of the new cell phones now also come with GPS and it is an especially nice feature to have in children's cell phones. Parents that are concerned about their kids whereabouts can get one of these phones that allow them to track their children.

There are a few different manufacturers who make GPS units and if you are thinking of buying one this summer you will have to make a choice. Mio is a maker that has units that are trendier than some of the others and they are trying to reach a younger crowd. For instance, they have recently released their Knight Rider GPS devices that sit atop your car dashboard and let you experience a K.I.T.T like voice exactly like the television series.

The biggest manufacturer by far is Garmin and they have a big share of the GPS market worldwide. They make GPS units that can be useful in driving, biking, boating, and other things. They make units that are all voice ready that means you never have to worry about taking your eyes off the road or trail.

Although the prices of GPS units have come down somewhat, they have not come down as much percentage wise as other new technologies such as flat screens. Usually, when something is new it is very high priced and only a few can afford it. As more units are produced and the new technology is perfected, the price often comes down significantly. As mentioned, the price has come down somewhat for GPS units but not enough to make them desirable for everyone.

The rental car industry has embraced GPS and all of the major companies have cars you can rent that have GPS units. Right now, you have to pay extra for a car with one of the units but it seems only a matter of time before they become standard. People who rent cars are usually from another place and need directions so GPS technology is an almost perfect match for this industry.
