If you are searching for a business opportunity in a growing industry with good profit margins and you also have a love of food and entertaining then why not look into starting a catering business.

In the following article we have set out a process that you can follow to get set up and open for business within a few short months.

1) Background - Learn as much as possible about the catering business and how to oversee a successful catering operation. Try to also learn about small business administration and marketing. Completing some classes on business related subjects is one great way to prepare. Research the industry in your region or town. Try to find out more about what the successful caterers are doing, how large your local market is and which different kinds of events seem to be the most promising. Talk to people who have hired caterers before to try and get a better understanding of your target market.

2) Experience - If you have not attained a culinary qualification or have not had relevant experience preparing and serving food and beverages then you should aim to get some experience working for a business in the industry.

3) Look into Health Regulations - One of the important points to think about is the local health rules and regulations that you will be subject to. Aim to know all about the paperwork that you will need and the compliance costs before you even dream about starting a business.

4) Think about where will you prepare the food for events. Having access to a large kitchen is essential if you are serious about your business. Is your home kitchen really suitable or will you need to rent time in a commercial kitchen or work out an agreement with the restaurant owner?

5) Insurance - Protect yourself and your business with an appropriate insurance policy in case things go wrong and you are liable for damages.

6) Planning a Menu - Study modern food trends, look at the selections offered by other catering firms and start to formulate a variety of menus for all occasions that you can offer to prospects.

7) If you don't have any experience as a caterer you should get some practice in by holding a large event for friends and catering to them. You will then be able to learn more about what it takes to pull off a successful event.

8) Branding - Start thinking about a suitable name for your new venture and put some thought into the reputation that you want to develop in the market. How will you stand out against competitors? What about your company philosophy?

9) Business Funding - List down all of the anticipated start up expenses and consider how you can cover them. If you cannot finance your business alone then you may have to research other funding options.

10) The last step in the planning phase of your catering company will be to write a thoroughly researched business plan. Even if you don't need to prove your idea to partners or bankers, a plan is still an excellent way to get all your research down on paper in one central document.

Get your catering company off to a great beginning by following these ten steps before you open your doors for business in this exciting industry.
