We are all very aware that when we smoke, we put ourselves and others in danger. Naturally smoking is bad for your body, but secondhand smoke also puts the health of others at risk. Thus, there are all kinds of things out there which help you quit smoking. Many of us do not realize that you can stop smoking without using nicotine replacement therapy. Of course, NRT, otherwise known as nicotine replacement therapy, does have its place. However, there are many other beneficial methods to consider as well.
Quitting smoking is extremely difficult. Like trying to lose weight, it is often frustrating and it is easy to slip. You have to be patient. You have to struggle. You have to have enormous amounts of will power. You have to remember that nicotine is very much a drug. As a substance it is very addicting.
Let us discuss, first, how nicotine replacement therapy actually works. To put it simply, it is designed to make your body and your mind quit craving cigarettes - or more rather, the nicotine contained within them. Replacement therapy allows tiny amounts of nicotine to enter into your body and bloodstream. Most often a patch is used, but there are nicotine inhalers and other methods used as well, such as nicotine gum.
One thing that you will notice about using NRT to stop smoking is that your body will still be getting nicotine. This is where a lot of people begin to think that they can control their smoking and that they might even be able to sneak in a few cigarettes socially again. This is not the case, for as soon as you start smoking again, even just small amounts, you will end up back to the smoking habit that you worked so hard to quit.
So, it may be necessary to take a more proactive approach when you are trying to quit. Fortunately, there are a lot of tips that are helpful in this endeavor. The first thing you need is not just your willpower. You also need to think long and hard about why you are quitting, what you are going to do to prepare for it, and when you intend to quit.
Now that you have decided to quit smoking, it really is now time to ask yourself why you want to. It is obvious that everyone is going to have a different answer, but what is yours? Do you want to be healthier; do you want to save some money? No matter the answer, you just really need to make sure that you know why.
After you have decided why you want to quit smoking you need to know that deciding to quit is a big deal. While you may think that you will finish off the last pack that you have in your purse or the carton in the fridge, it will ultimately lead to another pack, so make sure that you set a date on when you want to quit by. That way, you have a goal that you are trying to reach.
As stated above, quitting smoking is very, very hard and if you are serious about it, the time should be now. You need to start making plans to quit smoking and start making changes in your own life. For example, if you take smoke breaks at a certain time, you will need to find something to do in that time frame now.
