Millions of people are coping with hemorrhoids every single day, from the itching to the burning to the pain. The recommended treatment for individuals with long-standing or severe hemorrhoids is surgical removal of the affected area, which involves the removal of enlarged veins around the anus. Luckily, hemorrhoid surgery has become quite advanced and is not as much of an ordeal as it once was. Nevertheless, this procedure should be a last resort when all other treatment options have failed.

There are certain circumstances under which having hemorrhoid surgery is believed to be the best alternative to help you do away with hemorrhoids. Some of the indications that surgery is required include incessant itching, intense discomfort, blood clots, anal bleeding and infection. But it will be necessary for you be examined by your health care provider so he/she can assess if this procedure is appropriate for you.

The most common hemorrhoid removal procedure is rubber band ligation. This procedure is performed by wrapping a small rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, which cuts off the blood flow. The good news is, anesthesia isn't required as there are no nerve endings in the rectum. Approximately one week post-surgery the tissue will fall off.

When you have hemorrhoids requiring surgery, another alternative is sclerotherapy, which is when chemical injections are used to shrink or destroy the hemorrhoid. This procedure gets rid of hemorrhoids by causing inflammation and ultimately thickening the skin, which prevents the formation of further hemorrhoids. Another way of removing hemorrhoids is to employ infrared coagulation, in other words burning them off using infrared light.

At times, a surgical treatment known as a hemorrhoidectomy may be required to remove hemorrhoids that are severe in nature, or when you have a lot of them. A hemorrhoidectomy is the only type of hemorrhoid removal that requires a hospital stay and a long recovery period. Throughout this operation, the blood supply to the hemorrhoid is cut off and then the growth is cut away. Removal of the tissue around the hemorrhoid might also be required.

Surgical hemorrhoid removal via lasers has seen increasing popularity in recent times because it's so effective. With this procedure, the laser cauterizes the wound throughout the hemorrhoid removal process; as such, there's little or no bleeding. After the procedure patients should expect to feel a bit uncomfortable, although the pain will be much less in comparison with other surgeries.

Oftentimes, the outcome of any of these types of surgery is successful; however you have to take steps to ensure that hemorrhoids don't develop again. It's a fact that the patient will experience some discomfort following the surgery, however it should go away in several days. Taking some acetaminophen or ibuprofen will help relieve the pain.
