The coccyx, or tailbone, is one part of the body that can give you a lot of pain. The coccyx is that anatomical, lower-back structure that has been there in the human body since human beings evolved from ancestors who had tails. This is the remaining part of that original tail. Hence it is also called the tailbone. Though it is a vestigial organ, it is very important, as it forms part of the load bearing structure when you sit on a chair.

That said, the tailbone, or the coccyx, can cause a huge amount of pain because of a number of issues. Coccydynia is the name given to the problems caused by coccyx pain and related health issues. In some cases the pain is so severe that the coccyx may have to be operated on surgically.

However, it is better that surgery be considered only when there is no chance of the tailbone being corrected by other techniques. A lot of people use tailbone cushions to avoid putting pressure on the tailbone. These are effective to mitigate the pressure on the tailbone while sitting.

A lot of athletes, when they fall, have a tendency to get their tailbone fractured. This again can cause pain, however, there is no way to correct it other than to bear it out with pain medication, and gradually the bone will heal. Seat cushions are the best ways to avoid the uneasiness while sitting. Massage and applying external pressure can also help only if it is done by trained doctors. An untrained person can cause more damage to the tailbone than good.

An expert should be consulted to treat any coccyx pain issues. To the untrained person, this is similar to lumbar pain, however, that is not the case though. Consult your orthopedic surgeon for the right advice, and he can guide you on further treatment.
