When the time is right for you to add a pond to your garden, there is more to it than just digging a hole and filling it with water and fish. You will need to think about a liner, plants and of course what type of fish you will be keeping. Design and location of the pond is another big factor.

But what about all the bits in between, there is decisions to be made on all the extras that can only make for a finished masterpiece. Probably the first big decision is to decide whether you want a regular fish pond or a koi pond.

Now your essentials will be the filter and pump and of course all ponds need these, but if it is a Koi pond then these become very important as the water will want to be crystal clear. So before construction starts on any kind of pond some more essentials to think about are the electric and water supply, these will need to be as close to the pond as possible to make life easier.

Take your time and think about all these things and anything else you might want to include in your pond right at the beginning. Proper planning and preparation is essential to get the right end result and to make sure you do not forget an important factor of the pond, that might be difficult to add on afterwards.

A fountain is something that we may want to consider, they look great and sound great, but also help aerate the water for the fish. These are best set up with a separate pump so they can be turned off without affecting the filter system. You will probably want to turn them off during the night as in the dead of the night they can suddenly become noisy.

A waterfall is also another great addition to a pond and you can really use your design skills here as the scope is almost endless in the way you can form your waterfall. You can go for a short steep waterfall or a long flowing one, the choice is endless, but again these can be noisy during the night.

After dark you can really add something special to the overall effect of your pond by adding some lights, from different colors to above or below water, you can really create something amazing for when the evenings draw in making your pond come alive after dark.

Another important thing to consider in the planning stages of building a pond is the type of fish you will be getting for your pond. This may determine the way in which your pond is going to be constructed. A pond housing Goldfish may be a different design to one housing Koi, but on your desicion and completion of your pond will come the fun part of picking your very own fish.
