A regular hemorrhoidal flair up is bad enough, but when a hemorrhoid becomes thrombosed - meaning there is a blood clot inside making it swell even further - the pain can quickly become unbearable. Unlike clots that form in other areas, a clot inside a hemorrhoid typically stays put until it goes away on its own, but in the meantime, the sufferer is truly suffering. However, there are some fairly effective home remedies that are simple to use and provide fast relief.
One of the first things hemorrhoid sufferers try is a quick dose of a simple pain reliever. Usually a few tables will ease the pain within a few minutes, although keep in mind this is only going to mask the symptoms and not help the problem.
If you happen to have religious or other reasons for not taking any type of medication, you do have some effective alternatives available. First is ice. Apply on for one minute, then off. The numbing sensation will only last a few minutes once you remove the ice for good, but if you are able to continue long enough, the ice will actually help to get the tissue to shrink and recede, reducing the pain.
Hot baths and topical ointments are a close second. The ointments usually contain not only ingredients to help soothe the offending tissue, but medication that will help shrink the tissue. Since the swelling is causing the pain, shrinking the tissue will help reduce the agony.
For sufferers who seem to have this problem on a regular basis, you may want to seriously consider having the hemorrhoid surgically removed. Depending on the location and the size this may be done in your doctor's office with a local anesthetic, or he might recommend an outpatient procedure at the hospital. Either way - there is a bit of downtime and recovery time to deal with, not to mention post op discomfort.
If surgery is required, just be assured that this is indeed a long term solution and whatever discomfort you endure will be well worth iT.
