Many homeowners do not think about the importance of a well-functioning guttering system. Yet protection of the house, a family's number one asset, is a high priority. Guttering, as part of a good roofing system, serves as protection against rain. Water is one of a home's largest foes. Since it can be very invasive, homeowners need to minimize water penetrating foundations and basements.
All guttering systems work similarly. Channels for water are bracketed to the fascia board and, if mounted correctly, drain the water into the downspouts. This run-off is sent to the storm or sewer system. Some homeowners may capture the water in rain barrels or direct it into rain gardens. Growing environmental awareness has educated homeowners to the importance of minimizing rain run-off.
Without guttering, water drips-or pours-off the roof, creating pooling water that can damage the foundations and lead to leaky basements. Back splash on the side of the house also can stain or damage the exterior walls while contributing to more moisture dripping into the foundation. Lack of gutters also can lead to soil erosion, ice patches in the winter, and landscape washouts.
Guttering is available in several different materials such as aluminum, vinyl and steel. Aluminum and vinyl are less expensive and do not rust. However, they are most vulnerable to damage-denting more easily when branches or ladders lean against them. Vinyl also breaks down with continuous exposure to UV rays from sunlight. Steel is stronger, but unless it is stainless, it will rust and is also more expensive.
Most gutters are produced in sections which are jointed and caulked. However, seamless gutters are available and can be produced in exact lengths to match the measurements of an individual home. Some manufacturers will bring machinery to the house and produce the gutters on-site for precise fitting. Seamless guttering is less prone to develop leaks and is usually produced with a greater thickness.
Clogged guttering will be worthless, no matter how the gutters are manufactured. Fall and spring cleanings are required to keep them functioning. Fall cleaning should occur after the leaves are off the trees. Gutter screenings with netting or panels are available and may decrease the amount of debris in the guttering system. Multiple guard options are available for consumers, but the usefulness of the products vary by locale and climate. Each homeowner needs to research their value for his home.
No matter what gutter protection system a homeowner uses, he still will need to clean them occasionally. The gutters will need to be cleared of leaves and branches and then hosed out. Drainage through the downspouts also should be checked and, if necessary, cleared with a tool such as a plumber's snake. Sturdiness of the brackets needs to be examined. Gutters that are overflowing can cause as much heartache as the absence of gutters. All guttering should be mounted to maximize direct flow into the downspouts. If mounted and maintained correctly, gutters will provide a lifetime of service.
