One of the more recent trends in the computer industry is to go even smaller and more portable. Laptops are a pretty convenient size already, but netbooks have gone a step further and made a personal computer that you pack away in a small purse or bag and then use it almost anywhere you want. Even in a crowded airport.

It's happened to all of us. We end up waiting around in an airport for excessively long periods until we can board a flight, or the arrival is delayed and we find ourselves with nothing to do. This can lead to a lot of unproductively at worst and a lot of boredom at best. You could have brought a laptop, but they're a little unwieldy at times. That's when a netbook might be a better choice.

Laptops have gotten smaller throughout the years, but they are still comparatively large, and can generate a lot of heat. If you plan on using it for an extended period, and you really only have your lap for it to rest on, things can get uncomfortable pretty fast. All computers generate heat, but most netbooks are much more energy efficient and won't produce the BTUs of their larger cousins. And, of course, because of its smaller size, you don't have to rest it in one spot all the time.

It's important to note, however, that netbooks were never meant for heavy usage. You won't see any hardcore gamers setting up a netbook in an airport to get in a quick game. Netbooks are more appropriate for those who want to watch their movies, keep in touch with their favorite multimedia sites, or just listen to some music.

A netbook is not as powerful as a full-featured laptop, but there are still a number of qualities that make it worthwhile, especially if you have to do extensive travelling. First of all, the price is set much lower than standard laptops. Netbooks let you stay in touch without breaking the bank.

The compact nature of the netbook is another obvious benefit. They average between nine and eleven inches across, and are extremely lightweight. You won't have something dragging you down as you make your way quickly through the airport.

The good news is that netbooks are equipped with some top-of-the-line wireless equipment, and there will be many places in an airport that will allow you to connect to the Internet. This means you can spend your time taking care of your emails, playing on social media sites, or using any other of your favorite online applications.

Netbooks continue to grow in popularity. The technology also continues to develop and the slimmed-down designs become even more powerful. If you have to travel a lot and find yourself going from airport to airport, a netbook might be the best tool for the job.
