Influenza has been around for quite a while, but swine flu seems to be concerning more people than other strains. This is why there has been an increase in people wanting an alternative treatment for swine flu.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to other influenza viruses. These include sore throat, fever, stuffy and/or runny nose, cough, body aches and pains, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, chills and general fatigue. Although you may not experience all these symptoms, you do feel miserable and usually cannot continue to function normally.

Some people are in a high-risk group of developing dangerous complications from swine flu. These include babies and children younger than five years, adults over the age of sixty five, pregnant women and people with some chronic medical problems. The people who have died from swine flu have generally been in one of these high-risk groups.

There is no cure for a virus, and swine flu is no exception. Treatments are aimed at relieving the symptoms of the virus and trying to prevent serious complications from developing. The vaccine for the H1N1 is receiving lots of negative press, and many people are looking for an alternative. People in the high-risk categories should not take any chances, though; they should see their medical practitioner for advice.

To help you prevent getting swine flu, try to keep away from those who could be infected. Crowded spaces are responsible for the fast spread of any disease, so avoid these where you can. Always cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing and make sure your children do the same.

It is important to keep healthy, so take regular moderate exercise because exercise helps you resist disease; eat a nutritional, balanced diet; get sufficient sleep and reduce stress in your life. Viruses attack the gut first, so make sure you have probiotics in your diet. Eat yogurt or take capsules that contain live probiotics every day. Another great food supplement that helps maintain a healthy gut is colostrum; this is taken daily, first thing in the morning, in either a powder or capsule form. See a health food store for both probiotics and colostrum supplements.

If you do contract the flu, whether it is swine flu or one of the other strains, it is important to rest and allow your body to fight the virus. Rest in bed or in a chair, keep warm and dress comfortably. Keep hydrated with plenty of fluids to help flush toxins from the liver and the blood; water with lemon juice is refreshing and nourishing. Liquids are more easily digested than solid food, so have soups, herbal tea and freshly made juices. Vitamin C and Echinacea help the body fight the virus, so take these daily. For congestion, eucalyptus is great for both the nose and chest.
