It can be a drag house breaking puppies. If you're in the middle of the process you know what I mean. Having a new puppy or dog is a pleasure, but not always. One of the first things you need to learn is to potty train your puppy.

Unless you know what you're doing it can be quite hard house breaking puppy.

And if you get it wrong the results can be disastrous for your puppy, for you and for your family. House training a puppy correctly is a must.

And you may not even be trying to house train a puppy. For some reason or other you may have just acquired an adult dog, and need to house train him. Now of course that's quite possible too, but can be a disaster if you don't know what you're doing.

It takes more than a page to set out everything you need to know about house breaking puppies and dogs, I keep that for my website. But there's a few things you should know at the start.

The first thing to appreciate is that your dog or puppy looks to you, as the boss dog, to set the rules and make them clear. Dogs are prepared to follow the rules, but you need to teach them correctly. Some people think that teaching the rules involves punishing your dog for every breach of the rules, but don't.

But you do need to be firm and consistent setting the rules.

But rather than punish your dog for an infraction of the rules, including potty training, you need to remember that positive reinforcement is far more effective. In the past the preferred method of potty training was to show the dog the right place to go then punish him if he went anywhere else until he got the message. It can take a long time trying to train by punishment and can often fail miserably.

And remember, every dog or puppy is different. For some it will take almost no time at all to potty train him. For others it will take much longer. Be prepared for this and accept that it will take as long as it takes, even if you are doing everything right.

Don't expect immediate results. Be happy if you get them, but keep at it if you don't.

Remember like lots of other things it's the process that matters. Learn the right process, follow it consistently and it will work, when it works.

It's a simple process. Learn how to housebreak puppy, follow the procedure consistently and keep at it for as long as you need. Find out more about house breaking puppies on my website.
