Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid that occur in the ovary. Most of the time they are harmless. They are quite common and are often a range of sizes. An ovarian cyst during pregnancy worries many women because it can cause bleeding. Also large cysts can be painful, and cause swelling. Some ovarian cysts can even cause miscarriage. During a pregnancy all of these symptoms are frightening.

Some Ovarian cysts are a relative normal process of pregnancy. Some women produce multiple eggs. When the additional egg is not fertilized it forms a functional cyst. Functional cyst can occur in all childbearing aged women. They generally go away on their own and are considered normal. These cysts can take a few months to dissolve out of the woman's body.

When cysts grow rather than dissolve they are not considered functional. These larger cyst sometimes begin to twist or even rupture. Ovarian cyst that twist can be extremely painful. As the cysts continue to grow they can even rupture. Pregnancies with these types of cysts are at risk for miscarriage.

Besides being extremely painful, ovarian cysts are a concern because of ovarian cancer. Although this link is rare, cysts that do not dissolve on their own should be examined. Non functional ovarian cyst may develop into sometimes fatal ovarian cancer. This, however, should not be a worry during pregnancy. Ovarian cysts occurring during this time are least likely to be cancerous.

Although ovarian cysts during a pregnancy are a serious concern during they are easy to detect. Using an ultrasound or sonogram a doctor can locate the fluid filled sac. Even more, they can determine the size, location and type of cyst it is. A doctor can even determine if the cyst is cancerous.

An ovarian cyst that can rupture, twist or is cancerous requires special attention. A doctor would be able to decide if surgery should be used to remove it. Surgery is not always necessary however. Sometimes even the most painful ovarian cyst goes away on its own.
