Did you know that jumping higher is a skill that can be learned? If you learn the proper jumping techniques and practice them, your vertical leap can improve dramatically. I don't know how many times I have been on the basketball court and I see a guy who is so close to dunking but he just can't seem to throw it down.

They go up for the dunk never changing their technique, using the same approach and getting the same result...another missed dunk! By making a few simple changes in their jumping technique they could get the extra height they need to finish the dunk right. Just by adjusting your form and practicing the proper jumping techniques you can increase your vertical anywhere from 3-6 inches! Now we come to the question...what is the perfect jumping form? Let's explore...

Listed below I have the 7 steps to a perfect jump. Remember this is just a brief summary of jumping form but all the steps are there. If you would like more in-depth information on increasing your vertical jump go to the links I have listed at the bottom of the page.

1. Warm Up - Make sure you run around a little and get your muscles warm. This will increase the elasticity of your muscles and joints and increase your blood flow as well.

2. Stretch - Yeah, Ok, so it's not very exciting. However, stetching increases the elasticity of your muscles and this is exactly what we want.

3. Eliminate All Mental Blockages - Develop the mindset that you are going to muster up all the potential that you have within you. Failure cannot be an option or you won't be successful! Visualize yourself jumping higher than you ever have before.

4. Exaggerate The Last Step - This will put your body in the perfect position and prepare your muscles for EXPLODING up.

5. Use Your Whole Body - Don't just jump with your legs. Use your arms and lower back to help you out as well. Throw them in an upward motion to help propel you higher in the air. Also, pointing your toes upward toward your knees just before you EXPLODE up will allow for a more full range of motion.

6. Shift Your Momentum Up - You will have a lot of forward momentum gathered up right before you take off. Practice using this momentum by transferring it upward without slowing down or stopping before explosion.

7. Be Quick - Performing these movements quickly is essential. You want to transfer your momentum upwards fluidly and quickly to get the maximum effect. Shuffling your feet, going too slow, or over-exaggerating the last step will decrease your overall jumping height.

I hope this brief overview of the proper jumping technique will help you bring your vertical jump to new heights. If you would like to learn more about how YOU can increase your vertical leap then check out the links I have below:
