Removing cysts is usually one of the simplest procedures performed at the doctor's office. A cyst is like a pimple: it's a follicle that has filled with fluids and they won't drain on their own. Some can cause excruciating pain; others can be left alone for years with no problems or symptoms. They can be found almost anywhere - internally and externally. Depending on the cyst and the discomfort level, some doctors will prescribe various medications that range from over the counter pain killers to hormonal therapy (birth control pills) for ovarian cysts.
The removal of a cyst is more often than not, very simple. It's more often than not an outpatient procedure, performed under a local anesthetic, and post op recovery is fast.
For most people there are few side effects or complications after the procedure. There is always the risk of post op infection and / or bleeding, however.
For cysts that are already bleeding or perhaps have attached themselves to an internal organ that could be damaged, such as a Fallopian tube or even part of an intestine, surgery would be more complicated. Occasionally the cyst needs to be drained first before surgery is performed in order to reduce the chances of having the cyst burst just prior to or during surgery.
The scalp is another area where cysts commonly form. Between all the hair products we use, and our normal scalp oils, hair follicles can easily fill up with these substances and turn into cysts. These cysts typically can exist without causing any kind of discomfort or other problems, however, they can get irritated if they are in an area that is combed or brushed all the time.
If these become bothersome it's usually best to have your doctor excise them. He simply numbs the area and will probably do a needle extraction of the fluid. If the contents are too thick he may need to remove the entire cyst.
