Bed bugs are a source of nuisance that most households can do without. These tiny horrible creatures thrive on the blood from warm blooded animals and if they can't find a human victim they could go for a cat or dog as well. Furthermore, getting rid of them is not easy at all and it warrants a serious bug control effort to do away with them.

Travellers are mostly to blame for transportation of bed bugs, and once these bugs adapt to new surroundings, they reproduce very fast. They usually thrive in the gaps and cracks of beds, carpets and home furniture.

At day, bed bugs remain in dark sites. They choose cloth, wood, and paper surfaces. They commonly take place in fairly proximity to the host, although they can move far distances. They can also be seen in tuffs, creases, and foldings of mattresses.

An overwhelming majority of people harbour the wrong idea that bed bugs like places that are unhygienic. It must be remembered that blood and not waste is what attracts these bugs and hence a clean house is not enough to get rid of them. On the other hand, if the surroundings are kept clean, then the pests can be easily spotted.

Another misconception about bed bugs is that they are too small to be seen with naked eyes. In reality bed bugs are actually large enough to be spotted with naked eyes but they have a flat body which helps them disappear into little cracks and clothing layers easily, making it hard to spot them.

Bed bugs bite. They can live long without feeding - up to 6 months or a year.

Bed bugs in homes are best taken care of by knowledgeable pest controllers, so it is prudent to hire the services of such experts. However, if you want to fight bed bugs on your own, the next best thing to do is to properly clean bed sheets, carpets, etc., in hot water and then let them to be dried in the sun. Gaps in the walls should be filled with a sealant, and any piece of furniture that has holes should be got rid of as they can turn into potential habitats for these pests.
